Gallery Artists for "Copenhagen"
During the run of Copenhagen, we will be featuring three artists: Donald Dashfield on the East Wall, Nick Kirk on the West Wall, and Wayne Jarvis in the Back Hall. Here's some info about them, plus samples of their work:
Donald Dashfield is a "Purist/Perfectionist." His prize-winning black and white images are created in the painstaking "old-fashioned way" pioneered by Ansel Adams. Using conventional cameras he studies the light and pre-visualizes; then selects and matches film, developer printing paper, and advanced darkroom techniques to convey his personal interpretation of each subject. Each image is custom hand-printed - sometimes taking up to seven hours before producing a print that's just right; he then mats and frames with similar care.
Wayne Jarvis II I’ve been passionate about photography since I got my first camera when I was 10 years old. I completed my formal photographic education in 1981. My work with photography has included freelance commercial, portraits and weddings, running a large photo lab (the old school type, before one hour labs) and working at the fifth largest photo retailer in the country. I was with that retailer for seventeen years, fifteen of those years as a Certified Photographic Consultant. I worked with both amateur and professional photographers, helping to get individual styles polished and teaching thousands of amateurs the basics of shooting better pictures. At first I was resistant to digital both because I was firmly “old school” and because I was not impressed with the early, low-resolution images being produced by digital cameras. As resolution improved and computer software improved, I discovered how liberating digital photography is and, subsequently, found my art vision — a photographic rebirth, if you will. I’ve been shooting for my own satisfaction for years but at the urging of friends and family, I’ve moved into the public arena. Some of my work was on display in March 2009 at the Fort Worth (TX) Community Arts Center and the Arts Goggle. Other shows in 2009: the May Wolfe's Photo Fair, September at Melange Apron, October at Wolfe's Topeka, Baldwin City Maple Leaf Festival, October - December at The Gathering Grounds Baldwin City, a continuing display at Baldwin State Bank. I plan to produce a series of "PhotoArt" books entitled "eye of the beholder." The first book will consist of scenic works. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I find beauty in imperfection as well as in natural perfection. I also strive to portray the ordinary in a way that invites the viewer to see something extraordinary.
