Courage, as it transforms ordinary people to become risk-takers, has been an intriguing theme to explore. Sometimes the less challenging path presents risks as well; an idea I developed in Escalier in which climbing a tree could represent a less daring behavior for a preteen than hanging out at the mall. I have followed the theme with individuals who overcame obstacles to attain personal goals or pursued more dangerous careers. The series of monoprints at Stage West focuses on images of couples who have the courage to love and live in an uncertain world.
My technical approach to monoprints and painting is influenced by intaglio printmaking methods and early experiences with reductive techniques of glass painting with Gordon Smith at Smith Stained Glass Studios in Fort Worth. There I was introduced to drawing to scale and glass painting as well as the cartooning process to enlarge and transfer mural or window designs.
I was born and continue to live in Fort Worth, Texas. My career in art education at both the college and secondary levels has been very rewarding. I currently develop programs for adults and children in the Education Department of the Kimbell Art Museum. My BFA from Texas Christian University and Masters from Texas Woman’s University are in paintingI have been painting since 1970, and I feel that all my experiences making art and teaching others to understand and create art have enriched the development of my present work.
