Depressing? HARDLY.

I read a review of The Long Christmas Ride Home recently that called the play depressing.  It really surprised me as my take on the play, the Stage West production of it, was anything but depressing.

Though it does outline a moment of tragedy in the lives of a family of 5, the overall theme is one of hope, beauty, and courage played out amidst sheer theatrical magic.  I left the theatre ready to talk about the play for what turned out to be several hours.  THAT'S a sign of great theatre (not to mention great acting, directing, design and writing).

Two days later, I went to the movies to see Tropic Thunder.  For two hours I sat watching some of America's most well-known actors and comics lampoon mental retardation, vietnam, common decency and race, among other things.   It was offensive and degrading and missed the satire mark by a thousand miles. (And lemme tell ya, I love me some good satire..)  Tropic Thunder is the top selling movie in America right now.  Now that is a prime example of "depressing."

The Long Christmas Ride Home, now playing at Stage West through Sept 14th, is a brilliant and smart tale that focuses in on that moment in childhood that sets the course for the rest of our lives.  It may not tell your specific tale or mine, but it does give a gorgeous glimpse at our shared humanity.

Depressing?  HARDLY.  Intelligent, magical, startling, and honest?  Oh yeah.

So for all of the people out there who don't live in a safe, sheltered box (or perhaps for those who do and wish to escape it), I highly recommend Stage West's latest offering.  Don't be afraid to take the journey.  I promise it will change you, for the better, if you are strong enough to escape the weave for a few hours.

I was.  Are you?
